Happy Birthday, Dad!…
Thank you so much for all the lovely messages on my 60th birthday yesterday. I had a great day with friends and family…
Part of my son and daughter-in-law’s present was this fantastic cake of my Nikon D700 complete with controls and logo’s made completely by my son. It even had the rear JPEG preview screen with a photograph of me on it!

The Bardsey Apple - a story for foodies everywhere…
The Bardsey Apple is a bit of a rarity. Bardsey - Ynys Enlli in Welsh - is a small island off the tip of the Lleyn peninsular at the north end of Cardigan Bay. It has a religious history with a monastery having been founded there in the 13th Century. However, pre-Roman Celts are believed to have visited the island to pray and probably die while chasing the setting sun.
In 1998 one of the wardens on the island used some windfall apples from under an old tree to bait a mist net, which is used to catch birds; the birds are then ringed for research purposes. He noted that the apples were disease free. Unable to identify the apples they were sent to the UK National Fruit Collection in Kent where it was determined that the fruit and tree were unique. Thus, the tree obtained the title of “the rarest tree in the world”!
From the original tree on the island it has been possible to produce further trees and a good friend was given one as a gift. This year it’s produced a single fruit - the one in this post! The tree was probably pollinated by a neighbours bees so it is keeping a very tight grip on its Welsh heritage.
The apple is very tasty, slightly tart, with a good crunch. This one may have needed a little more time on the tree.
Read much more here at the Bardsey Apple homepage…

With all the apple-related activity going on on my Tumblr just now this little apple is feeling a tad lonely. He’s much more interesting than the Pink Lady and Gala one’s everyone seems smitten with. So… I give you… THE BARDSEY APPLE

Food…
Pink Lady (left) and Royal Gala

Can anyone please tell me why there has been a sudden upsurge in the popularity of this image?
It’s been posted here since July 2012, received a feature from the FOOD editors - the 15th note on the file, so it’s not a recent feature - and the odd “heart” but over the last two days its popularity has rocketed! I’m not complaining, of course, but I’d love know to what prompted the surge…

Food: Scrambled Eggs…

Dalla cucina di Antonio… Four eggs, fresh from the (free range) hens, whisked so there’s plenty of air in them, a little butter, freshly ground black pepper and hot wholemeal toast equals one delicious lunch!

Food AND Architeture…
I had a good day out yesterday with the X10 in Bakewell, Derbyshire. Some wonderful old buildings, interesting people to photograph and food. As a preview here’s a shot from a recently renovated building that is now a gelateria. It has a modern interior - glass floor, “I” beams, lots of stainless steel - and has received an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).  Food AND architecture; what could be better?
