SIGNIFICANT MOMENTS #4
Waterfall, near Alltchaorunn, Glencoe, Scotland…
There were so many locations to visit in Scotland on my second Light & Land jaunt. At this one in Glen Etive, I had hurriedly set up my camera a little further upstream. I turned round after taking an unsuccessful shot and saw an interesting tree a little further downstream. I packed up and wandered down and found this location instead. I perched precariously on the very edge of he river and made the image.
Since making this shot I have always walked around the locations I visit before I set my kit up, even if I know them well. Sometimes you find something new, sometimes a different angle, sometimes it just doesn’t work for you. When that happens I pack up and move on.
This image made an appearance recently in black and white & was also featured in Xonica’s excellent magazine. Despite my love of monochrome, I think I prefer this version.
There’ll be some more Significant Moments in a week or so.
SIGNIFICANT MOMENTS #3
A Scottish Dawn.
In the winter of 2009 I went on another Light and Land course, this time to Scotland with David Ward, a photographer I have long admired. Here I learned that landscape photography had a little Zen philosophy about it.
David taught patience. On most days I was with him he carried a large format camera over some quite rough terrain, yet he hardly ever set it up. While his students lapped up the locations he took us to, he calmly and quietly talked to each one of us making suggestions, tweaking views and settings and a myriad other little bits of advice and encouragement.
This is where my “one shot and make it count” ethos comes from. Wait for the right moment; be ready because you will know when it is the right moment.
I also learned that my Canon kit needed a serious upgrade if I was to improve my photography further!
