A Trip Through My Eyes…
For Laura’s project
This is a double trip, really… The train you see here was visiting Wales from Scotland and had to take took a torturous route on a rather large flat-back lorry along some very winding roads. It was appearing in the annual gala at the Llangollen Railway, which lasts for tens days after which all the visiting locomotives go home again, including this one.
The second part involves me… Although the railway is not a huge distance from my home this locomotive was working a very early train, like 7:30am! I set off at 5:30 because I had a particular spot in mind for my picture (the location featured here) and I didn’t want to miss out on the best pitch.
I arrived in good time, set everything up and, while waiting for the train on a bitterly cold spring morning, eating breakfast and drinking hot coffee… and waited.
About 7:30 I could hear the train starting out from about a half mile away. The noise grew and eventually the train hove into view working very hard and throwing out lots of smoke. The noise bouncing back from the trees was tremendous.
Steadily, the train gathered momentum and I was rewarded for my early morning start with this image. Was it worth it? You bet it was!
I spent the rest of the day in various locations along the line photographing more trains (yesterday’s image was another from this day) before wending my way home tired by satisfied with what was a quite magical trip. I finally arrived home at 9:30pm tired and a happy man; a good day and a good image.
